Phenomenon of hopelessness and motivational aspects of self-injurious behavior at persons, accomplishing suicide attempt

Abstract

The aim of this article is investigate the motivational aspects of self-injurious behavior (suicidal «intention» of suicide attempts (SA)) in attempters experiencing the Hopelessness (H). The possibility of prediction of the Suicide Attempt Severity (SAS) based on indicators reflecting the Degree of Death Wish (DDW) and subjective Assessment of the Probability of Death (APD). Regression analysis showed that SSA can be predicted only on the basis of the variable DDW in the group of individuals without H. In the group of attempters with H prediction of SAS on the basis of these variables was not possible. The results are discussed from the standpoint of the pos­sible explanations of the nature of predictive properties of H with respect to various forms of suicidal behavior
